Ice Murders in Minneapolis and How to React
A look at the systemic violence in the US on a national and International scale.
On Wednesday, in Minneapolis, Rene Nicole Good was attending an anti ICE protest as a legal observer. These are individuals who usually represent human rights agencies and attend protests or demonstrations to document and report any unlawful or inappropriate behavior from law enforcement. Rene was senselessly murdered by ICE agents on Wednesday. Shortly after Ms. Good was shot the ICE agent can be heard shouting “Fucking Bitch”. This sexism is more and more common within the US and that Rene Good was defending immigrants shows the intense level of racism and hatred that is especially common as ICE serves as Trump’s personal army or enforcers with no regard for any laws or rules.
Politicians were, in an attempt to control us, very quick to publish their narrative of the shooting. It is, I believe, common knowledge, that her murder is approximately a mile from where George Flyod was also murdered in 2020. His murder revived the BLM movement and brought it to an international level, and Rene Good’s murder has also sparked mass protest, and we will loot at these protests more later.
The Trump administration was very quick to label Rene as a professional protestor, an agitator and a domestic terrorist. Donald Trump, in turn spewed his version of “facts” on Truth Social claiming that Rene Good ran over an ICE agent with her car. These claims can, obviously, be disproved by anyone with eyes, and who choose to watch the footage for themselves. JD Vance, Trump’s toady, has also spoken up and said that Good’s murder is “A tragedy that falls on this woman and all of the radicals who oppose Trump’s immigration policies”. This not so subtle threat must not be tolerated any longer.
Equally as quick to speak up about the attack was Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey, both Democrats. They both spoke out against ICE, however, their “outrage” was hypocritical. Governor Walz referred to the ICE mobilization as reckless which is far too soft for what happened, it was not reckless, it was intentional. Mayor Frey said ICE should “Get the fuck out” yet refuses to take any real action against them. These two men are the same men who in 2020 called the National Guard on the people protesting in Minneapolis and allowed the use of Rubber bullets on their residents. Mayor Frey has also pumped millions of dollars into the Minneapolis police and the only limit placed on ICE has been that they can not use public parking spots.
This kind of behavior is typical of the Democrat Party and is a wake up call to us as workers in the US and in the world. We can no longer accept the reassurances of Democrats who make statements of opposition against ICE and other federal agencies but continue to allow police repression and violence, allow ICE to continue to kidnap people, and continue to threaten and use the National Guard against their own people.
The protests have not stopped, and they should not. The oppression has also continued. The local Hilton Branch, before the murder, refused service to ICE agents. The Hilton company was very quick to distance themselves from this branch, and even went as far as to remove the Hilton logo from the building.
The Justice department has also blocked state investigators from participating in the investigation into Good’s murder, and tensions continue to mount between protestors and law enforcement, similar to the BLM protests in 2020. However, this time the protestors must not give up, in fact we all should be out protesting and striking together against this oppression and violence, as it affects us all, we must not stop until every worker regardless of their skin color, location or gender is free to govern themselves.
Rene Good’s murder is an example of a dangerous trend within the US political system. From violently detaining immigrants and anyone who is not white, regardless of their legal status, or shooting people who defend them, to kidnapping Maduro and declaring that the US will run Venezuela and threatening Greenland, the US Government has demonstrated their willingness to use violence to achieve their goals. This violence is not limited to the US but is characteristic of Imperialism, and we must resist. We need our unions to demand the immediate abolishment of ICE, to discuss options for self defense against state repression, and to call for assemblies and strikes against racist violence in the US and against imperialist aggressions in Venezuela, Cuba, Columbia, and Greenland. We must be united against these struggles as they affect us all. This should serve as a warning call to all workers in the US and in the world to stop relying on our capitalist politicians to serve us, but to stand up and unite together in strikes against oppression, racism and capitalism and fight until everyone is free.
